March Browns are a good early season hatch on the Red Deer River. Cool, wet weather in late May to early June is usually the key ingredient to encouraging this hatch. There is some unpredictability in the exact time the hatch will come off, though it usually between noon and 5pm.

In 2007 we floated three days in a row on the same section of river. The first day we hit a heavy hatch for 1.5 hours, the second the hatch compressed into 45 minutes of carpet hatch frenzy which really had the browns popping on the surface. The third day was a bust as a freak snow storm moved in and lowered the water temperature at the same time that levels increased.
