red deer river brown trout photos

Caddis on the flats

A 23-1/2" hen sips a caddis.

Waiting Game

As the shadows came on the water, trout began to show. All this after a 2 hr wait.

Cold morning

A fiesty brown from a small pocket, mid November.

Fatty

David lost the grand daddy, just to hook up with this one 15 yards down the bank.

Agressive

Late September and one aggressive brown.

Along the seam

A light pmd hatch was enough to get this one moving.

Run, baby run!

From 60 yards above this trout ran clear across the river before turning and taking flight 4 times.

Hunting

A slow walk up a good looking bend

Slurp!

We'd just let another go when I turned and said,"Jim, you might want a photo of this one too!"

Into the evening

A nice trout that danced for the camera.

Take two

So we did. Double header on the dry - good hatches = good fishing.

A long wait

With the float 3/4 over, and every technique used, we got a break. Then we got 3 more on the same bank.

Fall

A beautiful fall float with one guest in the small boat.

Surprise!

Early season stoneflies!

Workin'

A heavy caddis hatch showed the inevitable. Two nice trout heads popping. Hooked!

Splat, twitch, slam.

A little too easy as this trout was keyed in to hoppers.

Drakes stand

We waited on a slow day for the shadows to come. The drakes started hatching and heads began to roll.

27"

A perfect moment.

Looking

Peering into the sunset under an overhanging spruce. Was that a rise?

Lucky.

High water streamer action.

Finesse

Short, perfect drift and a long trout.

Good Eeeevening

Late day caddis and a nice take.

Hello world

Days old and drawn to our boat, this little one followed us for a spell.

Rain

Some folks hate fishing in the rain. Some love it. Never stay home on a miserable day.

"Here he comes!"

And seconds later "Take it, TAKE IT!" and it did.

Smile!

Worked

We worked every 2 feet of every bank and pulled out 1/2 dozen. Every one was a photo!

Relaxed

The water seams were worked, flies drift through, and a couple trout obliged.

First!

A first Red Deer River brown

Finally!

Missed two takes and the trout got picky. Change the tactic and get the rise.

Slurp!

Steve had a nice one on. I asked if he minded me hooking up and not taking a photo of his little 22" trout. Couldn't wait! The fish was begging for a dry!

Skitter - patter

Let's get at 'er. A caddis in the shadows got this one.

Skwala

A warm day and a good trout.

Cloudy

Dark skies, soaking wet. Good day to be on the water.

Strike!

A brown takes the dry.

Floating

Looking at great trout water.

Cover boy

Kevin's shot turned up on the cover of Canadian Fly Fisher.

Pike-strike

A massive boil of a take then a good run. There are some large pike out there.

Fall

A random take of the hopper.

Here, fishy!

Calling in the dogs after a long fight.

Moose

We see several moose along the river each year.

Mudskipper?

No, this is a burbot. A random catch on streamers.

Heads

The big, rubbery lips of a large male brown trout.

Rainbow?

There are a few rainbow trout caught in the Red Deer. One every few years.

Slooooow

Walking slowly, under cover of the night, looking for snouts.

Out from the garden

Behind a large boulder, this fine trout smacked the streamer.

Peaceful

Alone on a beautiful trout stream.

Sneaky

A hidden access with a light boat. When there's just one guest, we pull out the small boat and pick our launch spots.

"There's one!"

A cast and short drift and a good head pops up.

Alberta's Wild Rose

And wild trout.

Sucker

The big sucker spawning run of February. Try to find a brown in that mix.

Hoppers!

A late fall brown on a hopper. It took a while for the day to get going but a nice trout came.
