Fish of the Red
Deer River
The
native species of Alberta's Red Deer River are walleye, goldeye,
northern pike, whitefish, and a host of minor species such as various
suckers, sculpins, etc. Only in the early 1990's did brown trout start
to show up in the system after nearly 2000 were stocked. Since then the
population has thrived and we are now getting a stable population that
some would say is a trophy fish scenario. There aren't a lot of them but
they are large, much like the waters of New Zealand. You can expect to
catch large brown trout on the dry fly. Trout as large as 34" have been
caught. Fly fishers can expect browns to 24" on a float with an
excellent chance of trout 26+". There are excellent trout in the Red
Deer River and they typically are not shy of rising to the occasion.
